What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are a long-term solution for restoring your smile if you’re missing teeth. They provide the foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and work just like your natural teeth.

One of recent dentistry’s most significant advances, the implants use high-quality materials and work very similarly to your body’s natural system. Titanium anchors act as tooth root substitutes by implantation and bonding with your jaw bone. Once Dr. Porsch places the implants and they bond with your jaw bone, the implants serve as anchors for small posts that extend above the gums.

Together, the anchor and post provide a stable foundation for permanent artificial teeth. With a dental implant, you can eat, speak, laugh, and smile with confidence and comfort.

How do I know if I need a dental implant?

Dental implants may be for you if you’re missing teeth, wear uncomfortable dentures, or want to avoid the removal of a good tooth to make a dental bridge. Dr. Porsch performs a review of your general health history, a dental exam, and a radiographic imaging exam to determine your needs and considerations for an implant.

How do dental implants work?

Dental implantation usually involves two surgical procedures that occur over the course of 3-6 months.

First, Dr. Porsch implants titanium anchors into your jaw bone. In the 3-6 months after surgery, the anchors reside below the surface of your gums and gradually bond with your jaw bone in a process called osseointegration. During this time, you can wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet.

Next, Dr. Porsch surgically uncovers the implants and attaches a small healing collar. Then, he and his team take impressions so your new teeth can be made. Once the new teeth are finished, Dr. Porsch connects a small post to the anchored implant and places your replacement teeth on top of the post.

The size, shape, color, and fit of your replacement teeth are designed to blend with your other teeth, so once the procedure is complete, your smile looks completely natural.

Do dental implants hurt?

Porsch Dental takes every consideration to ensure the implantation process is as comfortable and easy as possible. For the surgical procedures, you consult with Dr. Porsch about which anesthesia plans work best for you.

Over the course of the entire process, your daily life usually isn’t disrupted. You’ll be able to eat, speak, laugh, and share your restored smile with family and friends.
